Maja Konečnik was born in 1975 in Slovenj Gradec where she also attended primary school. After she finished grammar school in Ravne na Koroškem, in the 1994/95 academic year she started studying at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Ljubljana. She concluded her studies in 1998 and for her undergraduate thesis she received the Faculty award for best faculty undergraduate thesis. At that time she started working as an assistant at the same faculty and continued with her postgraduate studies. She earned a Master of Science degree in 2001 and finished her PhD studies in 2005.
During her education at the Faculty of Economics she visited several famous foreign universities where she worked on her research topic. In 2001 she spent 3 months as a visiting scholar at the Kelly School of Business, Indiana University, USA. Only a year later (in the 2002/03 academic year) she attended a doctoral programme in marketing at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. For this one-year study visit she received a scholarship from the Swiss government.
She is currently employed as an assistant professor in the Marketing Department of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Ljubljana, where she works as a teacher and researcher. She teaches courses related to marketing principles in general, tourism marketing and branding. Her research interest is similarly focused, encompassing the marketing area, especially destination branding. She has published her work in scientific journals and presented her research at foreign and local conferences. She also acts as a referee for many scientific journals. At the moment, she is involved with some marketing and tourism professional associations.
In addition, she is trying to transfer her teaching and research experience into Slovenian business practice. She communicates her ideas through professional articles in Slovenian newspapers and magazines and by lecturing to Slovenian companies. In particular, she likes working as a consultant in the area of strategic brand development.
Maja Konečnik actively speaks the English and German languages. In her free time she enjoys travelling around the world and discovering new tourism destinations, which inspire her especially due to the variety of cultures and people´s habits. She is particularly enthusiastic about fruitful experiences that are related to the sea and snow.
